SENIOR PASTOR

Robert Wesley Simpson

Dr. Simpson grew up in Maryland as the son of the United Methodist pastor, living in many different types of communities. While attending undergrad he served in the Baltimore Washington Conference at the Paw Paw Charge in West Virginia from 1989-91. After graduating from the University of Baltimore with a Bachelors of Arts degree, focusing in Economics/Finance, Philosophy and History he attended Duke University where he received his Master of Divinity in 1994, and was ordained a Deacon in 1995 and an Elder in 1998.

He has served in the North Carolina Conference at the Gaston Charge in Northampton County from 1994 to 1998, Englewood in Rocky Mount from 1998 – 2000, Bethel from 2000-2004, and at Front Street in Burlington, NC. While serving in Burlington he attended The University of the South, Sewanee, TN and received his Doctor of Ministry studying the Eucharist, spending extensive time looking at the tradition of “the table” in the life of the Church.

Dr. Simpson continues to be an active brother of the Order of Saint Luke, and serves as a Spiritual Formation guide for Duke Divintiy School. He considers himself to be a progressive orthodox theologian who believes the Church is at its best around the Eucharist. His vision abides in apostolic community’s reinterpretation of the liturgy of the Church. In the lectionary scriptures of the Church, regularly prayed in the daily hours, is where Dr. Simpson finds the life of the living Church.
